At Camp Sequoia, we host a Camper Council, where two campers from each age group are elected to participate in a weekly meeting with our Director.
We created the camper council to empower our young men and encourage dialogue and collaboration both with their peers as well as with staff. The division has a meeting the evening before the Camper Council to let their representatives know if they have anything they would like to bring to the director’s attention, and then members can propose said ideas to the director. This gives our campers a chance to voice program ideas, encourage open dialogue, ask questions, and collaborate as a group. This also gives our camper council members a chance to develop their leadership skills and practice public speaking in a supportive setting, as the council members announce what was discussed and any upcoming events news from Director Brian to their divisions each week.
